EMCDDA publication on injecting drug use in Europe
The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) has published a report on injecting drug use.

The report contains analyses on the prevalence of the problem and remedial activities in different European countries.

According to the EMCDDA there are approximately 0.75-1 million active injecting drug users in Europe. About one fourth of the users entering drug treatment have injected drugs.

The EMCDDA estimates that in 2007 in Europe 650 000 drugs users entered substitution treatment, which accounts for 40% of the total number of problem opioids users. In most European countries the prevalence of injecting drug use is holding steady or decreasing. It must be stressed that harm reduction activities are performed in all EU countries. The number of substitution treatment patients in 2007 trebled compared to 1995. In 2003-2007 the number of distributed needles and syringes increased by 33%.
